What Is Matt Rutledge Accused of?
At least five former students have come forward to report abuse by Matt Rutledge to administrators at Miss Hall’s School.
Rutledge taught at the school for over three decades, and during this time, he allegedly engaged in inappropriate conduct with students both on and off school property. Find out more about the accusations against Rutledge.
Grooming Students
Rutledge reportedly used his authority and influence as a teacher, advisor, and coach to initially gain the trust of students before sexually abusing them.
He started grooming one student when she was 15, and had sexual relations with her when she turned 16, according to a civil complaint filed in Massachusetts Superior Court.
Isolating Students
Rutledge is accused of using his position as a history teacher to isolate students under the pretense of giving them extra academic help. This gave him a chance to be alone with students and get close to them during this one-on-one time.
He allegedly preyed on students who were already isolated in the sense that they had few friends and were struggling in school both socially and academically.
Forming Relationships With Families
In addition to building relationships with students, Rutledge reportedly formed relationships with their families in order to gain their trust. Parents of students often found him charming and frequently invited him out to dinner and welcomed him into their homes.
Engaging in Sexual Misconduct
Rutledge is accused of engaging in inappropriate sexual relations with multiple students. One Miss Hall’s graduate claimed that when she was a teenager, Rutledge raped and sexually assaulted her while visiting her family in Connecticut.
The teacher allegedly showed the young girls he had relationships with how to cover their tracks and delete all messages between them to erase any evidence of his inappropriate behavior.
Making Threats
Rutledge reportedly threatened to harm himself if the girls spoke up about the abuse. He also made similar threats if they started to date other men or attempted to distance themselves from him.

Did Miss Hall’s School Fail to Protect Students?
Miss Hall’s School, former Head of School Jeannie Norris, and other staff members have also been named in lawsuits against Rutledge. These lawsuits allege employees knew or should have known something was wrong but failed to protect students.
The school allegedly maintained an atmosphere where close relationships between students and staff members were common. Rumors that Rutledge “dated” students reverberated throughout the school but no action was ever taken, according to reports.
One employee who worked as a lacrosse coach at Miss Hall’s as recently as 2022 told a dean that she was concerned about Rutlege spending time alone with a student, according to WMAC Northeast Public Radio.
“The community of former students has readily and easily rallied behind [Rutledge’s] victims because many of us had heard rumors of his inappropriate conduct during our own school years.”
– Letter signed by members of Miss Hall’s Class of 2014 to school officials
Rutledge was placed on administrative leave after a lawyer for a former student sent a letter to the school in March 2024 that detailed the abuse she allegedly experienced. He resigned soon after.
